|
Davy Crockett National Forest - Named for the famous pioneer Davy Crockett, this incredible wilderness includes 160,000 acres of streams, woodlands, and prairie. Set between the Trinity and Neches Rivers, this area is ideal for fishing (for largemouth bass), swimming, and boating on Ratcliff Lake, hunting for turkey or quail, or bird watching for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. To learn more about the history of the area, try the self-guided Auto Tour, available at a local ranger station. You can also watch for wildlife or plan a picnic lunch to enjoy at the lakeshore.

Camp Street Cafe - For fabulous live music, good food, and fun, head to the Camp Street Cafe in Crockett, Texas. Housed in a 1931 false-front tin building, the cafe features Guy and Pipp Gillette, your hosts for a variety of musical talent. You might see blues, western, folk, or bluegrass, so come with a spirit of adventure! Most shows start at 8 p.m. Past performers include Dana Cooper, Steve James, Carrie Newcomer, Katy Moffatt, and Stephanie Urbina Jones. The cafe also has a gift shop where you can find Gillette Brothers' music. So get your dancing shoes ready and head on over to the Camp Street Cafe!

Grapeland Drive Thru Safari - Located just north of Grapeland, Texas, the Grapeland Drive-Thru Safari is a completely fenced, natural environment where you can view rare species of animals. Follow the self-guided auto tour and see camels, buffalo, oryx, zebras, turkeys, and peacocks. You can stay as long as you like, checking out the watering hole and the adorable baby llamas. There are even opportunities to feed large animals, take a pony ride, or jump around in the inflated bounce house. If you like, take a ride aboard the safari train, viewing the 200 animals that live in this 59-acre natural environment. Come view the donkeys, pigmy goats, potbellied pigs, ponies, ducks, deer, geese, and more.

Texas Steam Train Excursions and Museum - Operating since 1896, this historic railroad still carries passengers through the pineywoods and hardwood creek bottoms of beautiful East Texas. To make the trip, visit the turn-of-the-century style train stations in either Rusk or Palestine, then get your ticket for a 1.5 hour ride on the old-fashioned steam train. You'll cross the Neches River on your journey along with other scenic sites. Because the Texas State Railroad is one of the few historic railways to operate two steam engines each day, you'll have the unusual treat of seeing the engines switch and then pass one another. Enjoy lunch or shopping, tour the museum, then hop back on the train for a relaxing ride home.
